Queensland-based ceramic artist Stephen Baxter’s practice incorporates bricolage, which involves the collection and reinvention of found objects, images and experiences from his immediate environment.

During his Hill End residency, Baxter intends to fossick around Hill End and surrounds from the viewpoint of a tourist:

Initially I intend to visit the various historically significant sites, outlooks and tourist attractions around Hill End to unearth the gold nuggets, the rich histories, held within. Having family connections to Bathurst and Oberon, I intend to visit places I have seen in family Super 8 movies and re-record those sites from my present perspective.

Once armed with first-hand information of Hill End and the surrounding region, he plans to develop his ideas into a final artwork, which he envisages will be a form of wunderkammer (a cabinet of curiosities).
